| Installation Instructions for Universal Garage Door Opener (UGDO) |
|
The UGDO comes with instructions that are written by BMW. These instructions are intended to supplement - not replace - those instructions. There are also instructions on MZ3.net. Click here to see them. The MZ3.net instrucitons are ideal if you are adding a UGDO to an existing LeatherZ Armrest. CRITICAL: Read these instructions completely before doing anything to your car. You will need the following tools:

Begin by removing whatever is in the center console of your car. It should be one of these options (click on picture for instructions):

| 1. Empty Center Console | 2. Cassette Holder | 3. Over-Engineered Cupholder | 4. Cupholder-Armrest | 5. Cupholder-Coinholder* |
Follow the instructions which relate to your car only up to the point where the center console is empty. After your console is clear, you can connect the UGDO, and then finish securing the armrest to the center console.
To retrieve the X400 cellular phone connector, partially remove the parking brake boot.

The X400 connector location varies slightly from car to car. It is large, approx 1" x 3/4". You will be able to feel it with your fingers under the carpet. In most cases, we have to make a 3" cut in the carpet to get it out.

Do not confuse the UGDO connector with the ashtray illumination connector. The ashtray connector is not required for the UGDO. If you pull it out by mistake, put it back under the carpet after you retrieve the X400.
You need to remove 2 female pins from the X400 connector. To do so, there are 2 tricks you should know. First, unlock the connector. The connetor may vary from car to car slightly, however, all of the connectors we have seen work as follows:

The connector has a locking feature. Ron Stygar called them "teats" and we kept the name. If you put a tooth pick in between the 2 triangles (Pins Locked diagram), the connector will unlock and you can push the connector towards the left (as drawn). The red teats will slide over the white ones. Once the connector is unlocked, the pins will come out of the connector much easier.
The second trick is you can use a BMW pin removal tool. I have several of these tools and I am happy to loan you one for your installation. I only ask you ship it back as quickly as possible so others may use it. Unlock the connector and then push the female pins out. The tool will push the pins back out of the connector as shown below:

After the 2 female pins are removed from the X400, you can make the remaining connections. The final configuration is shown below. Note the numbers next to each connector correspond to the pin positions on the connector. You will see them (but they are very small!) on the connector if you look closely.

After you've made all of the UGDO connections, you can install the armrest in the usual way. Make sure you read this note before you do anything else.

A properly installed LeatherZ armrest will look like this (parking brake is shown in the installed position, yours is still partially removed, UGDO not shown):

It is critical that the armrest sits flush with the center console, even during this temporary install. At this point you are ready to mark the position of the bolt hole. Use an awl or similar sharp object to mark the center of the bolt hole. The following picture shows the bolt already installed.

Remove the armrest. Lift from the rear and then pull towards the back of the car to disengage the tabs on the armrest from the slots in the center console. Drill though the point you marked earlier with a 1/4" drill. After the hole is drilled, we are ready to permanently install the armrest. I recommend the following:

Put a piece of tape on one side of your 7/16" combination wrench. This will hold the nut in place. Put the nut into the wrench, and we are ready to proceed. Re-install the LeatherZ armrest as before. Insert the combination wrench with the secured nut into the hole in the center console for the parking brake.

Move the wrench around until you can see the center of the nut though the holes in the LeatherZ armrest and your center console. Once the nut is lined up, drop the hex bolt into the hole and begin to tighten it with a 3/16" Allen/hex wrench.

Once the bolt is tight, remove all tools. If you happen to drop the nut inside the center console, a Sears pen magnet is the ideal retrieval tool. Re-install the parking brake. Reinstallation is the reverse of removal. Finally, there is a black rubber cap included with every armrest. This covers the bolt hole. Simply push it in place. you're done!
If you need help or have questions programming your UGDO, go here. Homelink has other accessories (light switches, etc) that will also work with your UGDO.
Why these tools are optional and a special note (make sure you read this!!)
I never liked the idea of drilling a hole into a car as special as a Z3. I would rather avoid it if possible. Many customers have reported that they did not drill the hole in their car. They did not use the bolt or nut. They claim that the armrest is secure enough with simply the plastic tabs mated to the slots in the center console. Others have reported using Velcro or double-sided tape in the center console recess below the forward cupholder of the LeatherZ armrest. I recommend that everyone try the LeatherZ armrest unbolted for a few weeks. If you feel that it is not secure enough, you can always add the bolt later. Even if you do not use the bolt, you can use the rubber cap to hide the bolt hole. This way, you may not have to drill in your car or bother with the nut.
